JOBS ASHORE FOR ETO AFTER QUITTING FROM MERCHANT NAVY
Merchant Navy is a good line for ETO if you are looking at descent payscale and profession. Not everyone would like to continue sea life for a long time. Some seafarers want to make money and settle ashore with family but some seafarers love sailing they want to continue their sea life. If your answer is No to continue your sea life and searching to migrate, find jobs abroad or locally then there are many job opportunities in the public and private sectors. Here is a list of job categories that you can try if you quit sea life.
ELECTRICAL MAINTENANCE ENGINEER :
This job role has huge demands in various industries, companies, hotels., etc. Maintaining Electrical Plants, Generators, Switchboards same job as ETO only difference job is in ashore. Payscale for Electrical Maintenance engineer is low in India. But countries like UK, USA., etc pay scale is more.
payscale in US $25000 to $75000/year depending upon the type of industry
ELECTRICAL SUPERINTENDENT :
If you want to quit sea life but not shipping industry this is the best option if you have gained sufficient knowledge and able to advise on worse scenarios this role suits you. There are many ETO who have quit sea life and working as a superintendent. Of course for becoming Electrical Superintendent you must be from ETO background else you are most unlikely to get hired.
payscale in US $55000 to $110000/year
ELECTRICAL INSTRUCTOR :
If you are technically sound and fluent communication then teaching can also be a better profession. You can be an instructor in the institute but you may have to do additional training for it. Second option instructor in a maritime-based company, usually these companies prefer from cruise background.
payscale in US $60000 to $80000/year
FREELANCE ELECTRICIAN :
If you hate computers or you dont like doing a lot of paperwork and you are focussing only using your hand tool skills this is the right option for you. The only thing your knowledge does not get upgraded by this role, the same job is done every day. You can be a journeyman electrician after gaining experience apply for a master licence to become a master electrician
payscale in US $30000 to $60000/year
SHORE TECHNICIAN :
Job is similar to that of a service engineer. You dont have a fixed location of work. You keep traveling here and there for maintenance, troubleshooting or commissioning plants. Salary varies based on the role (i.e., field technician, service engineer, etc), company and type of plant you are working.
payscale in US $40000 to $110000/year
ELECTRICAL SUPERVISOR :
only experienced Electricians are fit for this role. The supervisor s job is to motivate the team of Electricians and instruct them on how to perform their job safely and efficiently. Depending on companies and type of project they are handling salary varies.
payscale in US $30000 to $100000/year
JOBS IN SHIPYARDS :
From Electrical helper to Designer there are various role. Higher the role greater the job responsibility and greater the pay scale.
CONCLUSION : Getting a job inshore its difficult only skilled personnel can get hired. If you do not have skill get trained yourself instead of duping in a CV. Courses like AUTOCAD, PLC, SCADA, etc adds weightage to your CV. Experience counts very much in Shore because its more competitive compared to the sea. Everybody cannot sail, Sealife is not for everyone Similarly its difficult to quit sea life

I have graduated from Indian naval training institute as a marine electrical/electronic engineer and served in Indian naval ships for 15 years. After completion of contract from navy joined merchant fleets , and for last 13 years in offshore with FPSOs and seismic research survey vessels. In this role, I have been performing a multitude of duties, including examining electrical wiring to ensure that it is in good working order, and to provide insight into handling troubleshooting and repair work. Repairing and replacing faulty equipment and fixtures, installing new wiring and fiber optics, and managing conduit boxes, panel boxes, and motor controllers are all areas that I am proficient in. In addition to this, I am well-versed in the installation of components for new electrical systems, and upgrading older ones.
I have yard experience for FPSO conversion projects , new building of offshore vessels in DWD Dubai.
