BEST TIPS TO AWE INSPIRING CAREER AS ETO
ETO is one of the important person onboard since equipment in ships consist of various Electrical, Electronics and Automation. The role of ETO is vital. So here are some of the best tips to awe your career as an Electro-Technical Officer (ETO).
CORE KNOWLEDGE
Yes, this is very important. As an ETO you must know the working, operation, and construction of various equipment. Most of the time ETO is called for troubleshooting so it is good if you have core knowledge about the plant automation and control. If you are first time onboard, you have got enough time to learn and upgrade your knowledge and skills. Utilize free time for yourself and grow.
Know the ship power distribution (both 440V and 220/100V) very well it helps to isolate power supply for particular equipment or area in worst cases like Fire, Electrocution.
LOGICAL REASONING
Logical reasoning sometimes referred to as common sense. Every time you do not have to look into manual and circuit diagram for basic troubleshooting, you can perform basic tests using a multimeter or a line tester. For Example: When you are at mast replacing the bulb and informed bridge to switch ON light through walkie talkie but still the light does not lit up even after replacing with a new one. Instead, check the condition of fuses before climbing up on the mast.
READ CIRCUIT DIAGRAMS
Can you read circuit diagram faster? 70% of troubleshooting becomes easier when you know the circuit very well. Also know standard electrical/electronic symbols and numbering. Start with simple circuits if you are a newbie. Once if you pick up speed in tracing the smaller circuit, try with the larger one so this will help you in the future.
UPGRADE SKILLS
ETO must have Tool and Instrument skills which include basic tools like Screwdriver, Wrench, Keysets, etc, and power tools like drilling machine, grinding, cutting, etc.
- You must be aware of what size screwdriver you must use to unscrew and How much torque to apply.
- While using the crimping tool, Be aware of what size Lugs you need to put for your cable.
- When fastening/loosening bolt use correct size wrench to avoid injury and damage.
- While soldering make sure you are not applying too much heat or less heat. The main idea is to heat up every part of the connection to the same temperature so that the solder flows evenly into all the tiny spaces.
- Learn to use a power tool in a proper & safer way to avoid injury.
BE SELF RELIANT & CONFIDENT
Never be too dependent on others. Take advice but analyze the advice technically with your knowledge. You must be very sure How, When & What you are doing. In most of the cases, a simple job can be done by one person. Do your job confidently.
- Never skip overdue or breakdown jobs. If you fail to complete the job mention a scheduled job in your handing-over report.
- Try to do the job as per your company PMS (Planned Maintenance System).
- Carry-out routine tests and trips regularly.
- Organize your workshop, tools, inventories.
- Order only necessary spare and store.
- Leave ship property at ship while signing off.
- Always maintain records and proof of what you are doing. So, taking-over person will have an idea about the completed job.
TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF
You will be working in High Voltage, Hazardous Atmosphere So, be concern about your safety and take care of yourself.
- Never touch any circuit without checking it is live or dead.
- Make Permit to work, Proper Isolation, Lockout/Tagout, and also Risk Assessment.
- Notify Other personnel when you are carrying out any job.
- Ask assistance, If you are performing a high-risk or difficult job but never do it alone.
- Use Proper PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) and Approved tools.
THINK SAFETY WORK SAFELY
Carefulness costs you nothing. Carelessness may cost you your life So, you need to know A, B, C of it will save you if you follow it: Always Be Careful because the Ship is a bad place to get injured.
CONCLUSION
Share your thoughts, Communicate, Respect others, Never hide your mistakes, Be Happy and Make others Happy to maintain a positive atmosphere. Enjoy Sea Life.
